Jurors continue to weigh death penalty
BRIEFING: FARGO, N.D.
Jurors weighing the sentence for Alfonso Rodriguez Jr. finished their second day of deliberations in Fargo, N.D., Thursday without reaching a decision.
The federal jury of seven women and five men must choose between sentencing Rodriguez, 53, to death or to life in prison without parole for the kidnapping and killing of college student Dru Sjodin, 22, of Pequot Lakes, Minn.
Jurors began their deliberations at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and wrapped up at 4 p.m. They went from 9 a.m. to about 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
For Rodriguez to receive the death penalty, the jury must reach a unanimous decision. It is North Dakota's first death penalty case in nearly a century. The jury will resume deliberations at 9 a.m. today.
On Aug. 30, the jury convicted Rodriguez of kidnapping resulting in the death of Sjodin.
