St. Helens man convicted of killing neighbor could face death penalty 11:06 AM PDT on Friday, September 8, 2006 Compiled by kgw.com Staff ST. HELENS, Ore. -- A man convicted of killing his elderly neighbor four years ago could face the death penalty, authorities said Thursday. Barry Richard Dent will be sentenced in October. Dent was found guilty of aggravated murder and kidnapping in the 2002 death of Laurene McGilvra, according to the Columbia County trial court clerk. He was also found guilty of burglarizing McGilvra’s residence. Dent served as his own attorney during the trial, but Judge Ted Grove has now required him to have legal representation for the penalty phase and has appointed attorneys who were in the courtroom to provide him assistance during the trial. Dent’s trial had been postponed while he was in Oregon State Hospital for psychological treatment. Prosecutors brought the charges against Dent in February of 2004 after searchers found McGilvra's bones in a heavily wooded area in Columbia County. The St. Helens widow had been missing for nearly two years. Online at: www.kgw.com/news-local/stories/kgw_090806_news_dent_convicted_.7cc848b9.html
