Death Penalty Opponent to Share Views on September 19
Kevin Doyle, the New York State Capital Defender, will speak on "The Constitution, Catholic Social Teaching and the Death Penalty" on Tuesday, September 19, at the first Neumann College Constitution Day Lecture. The 3 p.m. presentation, scheduled for the Meagher Theatre in the campus Life Center, is free and open to the public.
As capital defender for New York, a position he has held since 1995, Doyle is responsible for representing those who face the death penalty in the state. An ardent opponent of capital punishment, he puts the death penalty on trial every time he argues a capital case.
Prior to taking his current position, Doyle worked for New York Legal Aid, a provider of legal counsel to those in need, for 6 years; for Lord Day, a Wall Street law firm, for 2 years; and for the Alabama Capital Representation Center, an organization that defends death-row prisoners, for 5 years. Explaining why his Wall Street stint was so brief, Doyle says that "defending the powerful is like praying for the soul of Mother Teresa."
Doyle's opposition to the death penalty stems from the same philosophy that lands him squarely in the pro-life camp on the issue of abortion - a belief in the worth of human life. A graduate of Fordham University and the University of Virginia Law School, he has written extensively on both capital punishment and abortion.
