Governor signs killer's execution warrant
In Harrisburg, Gov. Ed Rendell signed an execution warrant Tuesday for a Lackawanna County man convicted of stabbing a woman to death more than 2 decades ago.
The death of Steven Duffey, 45, by lethal injection was scheduled for Nov. 7. He was convicted in 1985 of the February 1984 murder and robbery of 19-year-old waitress Kathy Kurmchak.
The victim, who had been stabbed about 30 times, was found in the women's bathroom at Genetti's Manor, the thingyson City restaurant where she worked, according to court records.
Duffey is currently an inmate at the Greene State Prison.
In nearly 4 years in office, Rendell has signed 59 execution warrants. The 3 people executed in Pennsylvania since the death penalty was reinstated in 1978 all ended their appeals voluntarily.
