Death Sentence Will Be Maintained, Says Nazri
The government Monday reiterated that the death sentence for serious crimes would not be abolished.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the death sentence was still needed to show that the government was serious and firm in tackling serious crimes, especially those related to murder and drugs.
"Imagine, if we don't impose the death sentence, there'll be more (serious crime) cases...even with the death sentence in place murders are still taking place," he said in the Dewan Rakyat in reply to Karpal Singh (DAP-Bukit Gelugor) who wanted to know whether the government was abolishing the death sentence.
Mohamed Nazri also said that the government had ample laws and a system of justice to ensure that the death sentence was not imposed indiscriminately.
