Indonesia Sets Date for Execution of Christian Militants
The lawyer for 3 Indonesian Christian militants convicted of leading a mob
that killed Muslims says they will be executed by firing squad on
Thursday.
Fabianus Tibo, Marianus Riwu and Dominggus Silva were sentenced to death
in 2001 after being found guilty of leading a Christian mob in clashes
against Muslims in religiously divided Central Sulawesi.
The condemned men are all farmers. They were scheduled to face a firing
squad last month, but their execution was delayed after an appeal from
Pope Benedict.
Clashes between Muslims and Christians in 2000 and 2001 killed more than
1,000 people in Central Sulawesi.
