The 4th World Day against the death penalty will be held on October 10th.
Many local initiatives will be carried out in France and around the globe
in order to help celebrate this World day. To see the full program of
events, check the web page www.worldcoalition.org .
The 2006 edition will focus on the failures of justice which any death
sentence and execution represent. The World coalition will point to the
public the failures embodied by 5 cases of death sentences: an innocent
prisoner in China, a victim of discrimination in Saudi Arabia, a minor in
Iran, a mentally-disabled person in the United States, and a defendant
that didn't have a fair trial in Nigeria.
On the World coalition's website you will find 5 petitions that support
the sentenced prisoners and call upon the national authorities to abolish
the death penalty in their respective countries: www.worldcoalition.org .
THE WORLD COALITION AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY
The World coalition against the death penalty, which summons several NGOs,
Bars, local organizations and Labour Unions, has been created I Rome on
May 13th 2002. This coalition aims at reinforcing the international
dimension of the struggle against the death penalty and at helping to put
an end to all death sentences and executions. The World coalition puts its
effort, among others, in promoting the establishment and the development
of national coalitions against the death penalty.
Since 2003, the Coalition has set the 10th of October as the date of the
World day against the death penalty. This totally-decentralized event,
including the countries that apply the death penalty, calls upon the
citizens and organizations that wish to say NO to the death penalty to
undertake their own initiatives on October 10th.
