Saudi Arabia beheads 5 convicted murderers in separate cases
Saudi Arabia on Monday beheaded 2 Saudis and 3 Yemenis convicted of murder in separate cases, the Interior Ministry said.
Hasan bin Awadh al-Qahtani was beheaded in the southern city of Asir for murdering his wife, who was nine months pregnant. Another Saudi, Mubarak bin Faris al-Mudaibry, was beheaded in Qassim, north of the capital Riyadh, after his conviction for shooting his father to death.
The 3 Yemenis — Mohammed bin Hmood bin Hasan, Muneer bin Saif bin Abdullah and Abdul-Raheem bin Omar Marta — were beheaded in Jiddah. Bin Hasan had been convicted of robbing and murdering a Pakistani taxi driver, and bin Abdullah had been found guilty of fatally shooting another man following an argument. Marta was convicted of fatally robbing and killing an Egyptian man.
Their executions brought to 13 the number of people beheaded in the kingdom this year. Saudi executions are performed with a sword and in public as a deterrent.
The kingdom beheaded 83 people in 2005 and 35 people in 2004. The number of executions varies sharply from year to year because of a backlog of cases, rather than a falloff or increase in the rate of capital punishment. Judges hand down sentences for cases from the previous year at the same time as the current one.
Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which people convicted of murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery can be executed.
