The Exonerated and Amnesty International
As part of the Dublin Theatre festivals showing of 'The Exonerated,'
Amnesty International Irish section and the Irish Centre for Human Rights
will co-host an important seminar on the Death Penalty in the Liberty Hall
Theatre, Dublin on Saturday 7th October at 4:30pm.
The Exonerated tells the story of six death row inmates in the United
States who, in the face of new evidence, are eventually exonerated before
their execution.
The award winning play by Jessica Blank and Eric Jensen tells the story of
16 years that were taken away from Sunny Jacobs, convicted and sentenced
to death for a crime she did not commit. But her story is not unique. The
Exonerated shares the true stories of six innocent survivors of death row.
Their stories, told in their own words. The renowned actor Aidan Quinn,
will be a guest actor in the Exonerated during its run in Dublin.
Ideally timed for theatregoers who would like to attend the matinee, or
the evening show that day, the seminar brings together four of the leading
campaigners against the death penalty.
Professor William Schabas OC is Director of the Irish Centre for Human
Rights, at the National University of Ireland, Galway. He is the author of
The Abolition of the Death Penalty in International Law (Cambridge
University Press, 2003) and many other academic works on the subject.
Saul Lehrfreund MBE and Parvais Jabbar are London-based solicitors who
conduct litigation on behalf of capital defendants and death row inmates
in the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. They are Executive Directors of The
Death Penalty Project Limited.
Peter Hodgkinson OBE is Founder and Director of the Centre for Capital
Punishment Studies, Westminster University Law School, London. He was a
probation officer with the Inner London Probation Service for 15 years
during which time he developed an interest and expertise in the management
of life sentenced and offenders with mental illness.
No admission charge.
