While we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of abolition, 4 French out of 10 are in favor of its reinstatement of the death penalty.
To 42% of the French, the resinstatement of capital punishment would be regarded as a good decision, this is what came out of TNS Sofres poll released on Saturday Sept 16th.
While the death penalty has been abolished 25 years ago, 52% of the population still declare being opposed to it, 6% remain without opinion, according to the poll.
The young generation is particularly in favor of capital punishment: 32% of the 25-32 years old are in favor, 48% for the 35-49 years old and after 65 yrs old. 44% of men are in favor of resinstating the death penalty while 42% of women share the same view. Civil servants would favor such a return by 30% while 51% from the private sector agree. Those who are close to the extreme right are massively for the return of capital punishment (89%), while 60% of the Republicans share the same opinion. 29% of those close to communist ideas and 30% of those close to socialist ideas are equallly in favor of capital punishment. 57% of those without education are also in favor, while only 21% of those with education share this view. According to Franois Miterrand's promise, the abolition bill was voted on September 18th 1981 at the National Assembly with a large majority of votes despite the hostility of the public opinion. 62% of the French at that time were in favor of capital punishment.
