Death penalty upheld in case of poisoned energy drinks poisoning case
The Taiwan High Court's Taichung branch rejected yesterday the appeal by a defendant in the Bullwild energy drink poisoning case of May last year and sentenced him to death.
According to the prosecution, Wang Ching-chan, 41, laced 12 bottles of Bullwild energy drink in 11 convenience stores with potassium cyanide -- an extremely poisonous chemical -- on May 17 last year and placed the bottles back on store shelves.
Although Wang posted a sign on each bottle, warning that "I am poisonous. Don't drink," five consumers bought the tainted drinks and were poisoned. One of them died, and the other four were injured.
Paolyta Co., which produced the beverage, was forced to recall 1.6 million energy drinks from stores around Taiwan.
Police eventually arrested Wang, who admitted to the crime. On July 11 last year, the Taichung District Court sentenced him to death for murder.
Wang appeared depressed after the Taiwan High Court rejected his appeal. He was remanded to the Taichung Detention Center.
Because the crime Wang committed is a felony, he will be automatically entitled to another appeal to the Supreme Court.
